Family Health Insurance in California
Families have their own sets of health care needs. They generally use a wider range of health services than individuals do and since they’re often on a tight budget, they need access to low cost health insurance. California Health Plans makes it easy for California families to find quality medical coverage by providing quick and easy ways to evaluate plans and compare their costs.
Growing families often benefit most from a medical insurance solution called managed health care. Managed health care gives families access to a variety of different types of health care professionals, but keeps costs low by working with doctors, specialists, clinics and hospitals that work within a network.
There are three types of managed health care plans:
• PPOs: PPOs (Preferred Provider Organization) provide families with a network of health care providers but they don’t penalize policyholders severely for visiting out-of-network providers.
• HMOs: With HMOs (Health Maintenance Organizations), families choose a primary care physician who then becomes that family’s “gateway” to all needed medical services. The primary care physician can be a family practitioner, an internist or even a pediatrician. HMOs are the least expensive type of managed care. Copayments can run as low as $10 a visit. HMOs do not give policyholders the option of choosing an out-of-network health care practitioner, however.
• POS: POS (Point of Service) plans combine PPO and HMO components. Health care services are managed through a primary care physician, but policyholders have access to out-of-network providers.
What Health Insurance Consists Of
Health insurance is a political issue in the U.S. today, where it’s been estimated as many as 50 million Americans go without. California Health Plans makes it easy to find the right medical health insurance plan at a very affordable price.
What is health insurance. Why is it so important?
Health insurance is a specialized type of insurance designed to defray medical expenses. Health care costs continue to soar. The average cost of a one night hospital stay these days is somewhere between $3,000 and $5,000, depending upon the type of nursing care, medications, diagnostic tests and other services a patient receives.
Health insurance pays a portion of the medical expenses an individual incurs. How large a portion depends upon the individual’s plan. Different plans cover different services, but in general, a standard medical health insurance plan covers:
• Physician and specialist office visits
• Routine checkups with routine diagnostic laboratory tests like blood tests, pap smears and the like.
• Emergency room visits and related urgent care services
• Medically necessary diagnostic procedures such as CAT scans, MRIs and the like
• Medically necessary surgical procedures
• Prescription medications
Patients remain responsible for paying some portion of their health-related fees in two different ways: patients generally must pay a portion of their expenses, or deductible, before health insurance kicks in, and patients pay co-payments, small fees, when they visit their physicians or buy prescription medication.
