CareFirst serves the community by providing vital, affordable health insurance to its 3.6 million members - but that's only a start. In 2008, CareFirst commits 2 percent of its net operating income to fund worthy programs and organizations in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia.
Whether it's "K's for Kids" programs at minor and major league baseball parks directing donations to community groups for every strikeout recorded by the home pitcher, or a $300,000 grant to Health Care for the Homeless, CareFirst's contributions are making a difference.
CareFirst seeks to invest its charitable donations in organizations and initiatives tackling challenges consistent with the three-pronged CareFirst Commitment initiative. CareFirst Commitment focuses on ways to:
- Ensure patient safety and improve quality of care
- Make health care more affordable
- Close health care "gaps" and address ethnic and racial disparities
CareFirst also relies on regular health needs assessments and continuing dialogue with community and government leaders to shape its annual giving.
